Why bodybuilders need Telmisartan
Telmisartan is a medication that is commonly used to treat high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which work by blocking the action of a hormone called angiotensin II that constricts blood vessels and increases blood pressure. In addition to treating hypertension, telmisartan has several other potential health benefits.
In this article, we will explore the uses, benefits, side effects, and dosage of Telmisartan in a bodybuilding context.
MEDICAL USES OF TELMISARTAN
The primary use of telmisartan is to treat hypertension. Hypertension is a common medical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by elevated blood pressure, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Telmisartan helps to lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, which makes it easier for the heart to pump blood throughout the body.
Telmisartan is also sometimes prescribed to people with diabetic nephropathy, a kidney disease that can occur in people with diabetes. In diabetic nephropathy, the kidneys are damaged by high levels of glucose in the blood. Telmisartan can slow the progression of this condition by reducing the amount of protein in the urine, which is a sign of kidney damage.
In addition to its primary use as a treatment for hypertension, telmisartan has several other potential health benefits. These include:
- Reduced risk of stroke: Telmisartan has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke in people with a history of cardiovascular disease. A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that telmisartan reduced the risk of stroke by 25% in people with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
- Improved insulin sensitivity: Telmisartan can improve insulin sensitivity, which is the ability of the body to use insulin to lower blood sugar levels. This makes it a potentially useful treatment for people with type 2 diabetes. In a study published in Diabetes Care, telmisartan was found to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
- Improved cognitive function: Telmisartan has been shown to improve cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that telmisartan improved cognitive function in people with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease.
- Reduced inflammation: Telmisartan has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
APPLICATIONS OF TELMISARTAN IN BODYBUILDING
Telmisartan is a powerful tool for any bodybuilder. As you can probably imagine, the aforementioned benefits can do wonders for a bodybuilder who is using enhancements.
Firstly, the anti-hypertensive properties of this drug make it a perfect ancillary for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure caused by AAS. Furthermore, Telmisartan has been shown to prevent and reverse cardiac hypertrophy (Left Ventricle Hypertrophy), something that many enhanced bodybuilders experience and one of the leading causes why bodybuilders die prematurely.
Secondly, the positive effect of Telmisartan on insulin sensitivity can counteract the insulin resistance that drugs like MK-677, GH and GH-secreting peptides tend to cause.
Thirdly, Telmisartan can reduce inflammation and bring down C-Reactive Protein levels (check out the previous Inner Sanctum post for more info on CRP elevation in bodybuilders and its role in cardiovascular disease).
But that is not all. Telmisartan has another key benefit that may help bodybuilders improve their physiques.
Telmisartan has been shown to increase the activity of a protein called PPAR-delta, which is involved in the regulation of metabolism and the burning of fat. Telmisartan may be able to promote fat loss and improve body composition by acting through this pathway.
SIDE-EFFECTS OF TELMISARTAN
Telmisartan is a very safe drug that has been shown to be well-tolerated even after years of consistent use. The main risk associated with Telmisartan is hypotension (low blood pressure), which tends when people who have naturally normal/low blood pressure take it (there is no reason to take this medication if that is the case). It can also happen if we stack Telmisartan with other blood-pressure-lowering medications like Tadalafil or Nebivolol.
This side-effect usually manifests itself in the form of dizziness, nausea and headaches.
HOW TO DOSE TELMISARTAN
Telmisartan is available in tablets of various strengths, including 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg. Typically, the starting dose for bodybuilders is 40 mg once daily, which can be increased to 80 mg once daily if needed.
Using a blood pressure monitor to keep track of one’s blood pressure before and during Telmisartan use is incredibly important, as it helps us know how much Telmisartan we need to take (if at all).
